Stoic practice · 1–3 min

Postponement / Time-Out

Let the involuntary first flash pass before you act.

Use when: anger, urge, reactivity, impulsive speech

How the practice works

  1. Read the frame The first flash of feeling is involuntary. The practice begins with what you do next: do not send, say, or decide while the passion is hot.
  2. Notice the intensity How hot is the reaction right now?
  3. Allow time Put the message down. Let the first force pass.
  4. Record what you notice Re-decide: respond calmly, wait longer, or let it go?
  5. Choose the next action What will you do next?
“The greatest remedy for anger is delay.”

— Seneca, On Anger 2.29
